While those aged 15 to 30 can vote in the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections, only those between 18 to 24 years old can run for a post, the National Youth Commission (NYC) said yesterday.

The NYC, which led in the crafting of the implementing rules and regulations (IRR) of the SK Reform Act, said the registration would be from July 15 to 30.

Comelec spokesman James Jimenez posted in his Twitter account @jabjimenez that the adjustment in the age bracket is provided for by Republic Act No. 10742 or the SK Reform Act of 2015.

Those who participated in previous SK elections are automatically registered for the SK polls.

The SK elections will be held simultaneous with the barangay elections on Oct. 31.

“With the signing of the SK Reform Act IRR, we have gained more confidence in pushing our plans and strategic partnerships to encourage the youth to get involved in a new and reformed Sangguniang Kabataan,” NYC chairman Earl Saavedra said.

The SK system was suspended in 2013 amid reports of corruption, including misappropriation of funds.
